Introduction:
Wow, I am so excited to read this book. One thing that worries me is that teachers, a lot of the time, are left-brain preparing us when this right-brain wave is coming. This book will be an essential tool for all teachers in their ability to teach students in a way that will truly prepare us for the future. I like the way that this book is set up, especially in the way that he wants us to learn how the brain works before we learn how to work it. Also, this will be a big change in the economy and everyday life when this wave does come! We will have a large change in pace.
Part one: The Conceptual Age
So basically the left-brain has been treasured for years but now a computer can replace it. I never really thought of it this way before, I really only thought of computers as a tool that people can use to help in their development and learning in education. Never have I thought of them as a tool that could replace the mind, but now that he mentions it, it really makes a lot of sense to me. Soon nano technology will be able to replace the human doctor.
Also, I never realized that we exercise our left-brain way more than our right brain. We read from left to right and we also write that way. Maybe that is why the Chinese, Japanese and other foreign language speaking countries are so smart, because they read and write from right to left.
Part two: Abundance, Asia, and Automation
I would have never realized these things even though they were basically screaming in our faces. I wonder how he thought of these things? When, why, and how did he think of this conceptual age. I wonder if it just clicked one day or if he had been wondering/pondering on it for a long time.
Part three: High Concept High Touch
The rainbow project that was mentioned sounds like a lot of fun. It is true that IQ can only influence which profession you go into not how well you do in it because that is decided by how much you enjoy doing what you do and how much effort you want to put into it! I know that when I really enjoy something I put 10 times more effort into it then when I do not like what I am doing.
It is amazing that only 4-10% of IQ accounts for career success and that the rainbow project has been twice as accurate as the SAT in predicting how well students perform in college.
Other reactions:
I am thrilled to do the exercises and see how my understanding and overall ability to perform intellectually develops. It should be an amazing thing to experience. Also I thought it was interesting how the cover had a brain with music lyrics (right brain) over what looks like a computer code (left brain) signifying the use of both sides of the brain in a WHOLE new mind!!
After reading this section and discussing it we came to a conclusion that kindergarten in the master of education. They have a complete balance between left and right-brained thinking. They work for part of the day on something like designing pictures, then they play for a while, then they have story time where they read a story that says that when a person falls down and is sad you express empathy towards them, and then you take a nap (not one of the six senses:-). Then when your mom comes to pick you up, you express the meaning of your creations from class. The kindergarten class may seem quite simple and definitely not a thing to be considered the best structured form of education, but when it is broken down, you realize that it has quite a symphony between left and right brained activities. They may be learning the alphabet in a systematic way but they also incorporate play or story into it.
